Seafood Capital of the Deep South

Bayou La Batre is a small picturesque French-oriented village nestled in Southwest Alabama. Its economy and people are dependent for approximately 85% of its gross income from the seafood industry. In Bayou La Batre, all types fishing vessels are to be found, ranging from the small lugger type vessel to the large modern freezer type shrimp trawler. Along with our modern fishing fleet, there are charter pleasure boats which provide accommodations for any sportsman or angler to satisfy his fishing needs.

Presently there are 300 locally owned fishing vessels utilizing the Bayou as their homeport for all their needs. The local shipyards are under contract to furnish 150 new locally owned trawlers to our existing fleet.

A variety of fishing abounds year-round: oystering in the Fall and Winter months, shrimping the Gulf waters year round, catching of crabs in Summer and Fall, plus excellent sports fishing in the warm and cooler months of the year.

To commemorate our fishing industry, special events are held annually-such as the nationally known "Blessing of the Fleet" and the "Miss Seafood Contest."

The seas have been and will continue to be Bayou La Batre's source of income, food, transportation and entertainment for its people. The accomplishments of our seafood industry, community and related industries have been brought about by the strong determination and fortitude of all Bayou La Batre citizens.
